Option 1: (Discussion) Question: Based on what you have seen and read in the lesson, why do you think people drink and drive? Can anything be done to solve the problem of drink driving?
Based on what i have seen and read in the lesson, i think people drink and drive because, firstly, they think that it will be safe if they drive home by themselves and not taking public transport or ask their friends help to drive them home. In my opinion, it will more dangerous if they drink and drive home by themselves as it will put other road users at risk.
Secondly, it is because they find it troublesome to take public transport. Some of them lived quite far and they find it difficult to went back to their home.Besides that, buses,MRT or LRT will be closed at 12 midnight. For example, if the events or an occasion ends at 12 midnight or more than that, he/she will rather drive their car by themselves. Also, if he/she did not have enough money to take taxi, they will think the same way.
To solve this matter, the public transport can open for 24 hours or night shift. Moreover, they can ask help from their friends to drive them home. Next, the community centre can help them by organizing a campaign about the conseqeunces of drink and drive and even better if the community can help them to quit drinking.Lastly, the police force can have more road block in certain areas.

Hi,
ReplyDeleteSome thoughts:
You suggest that people who drink and drive do it possibly because they think it is safer than taking public transport or letting their friends drive them home. Why would they think this? I ask because it does not seem to make sense.
Secondly, taxis do operate around-the-clock, so why do some people refuse the safer option of taking a taxi home? And honestly, isn't it cheaper to pay $20 for a cab than risk a $5000 fine and possible jail term for drink driving?
I agree with you on what the community can do in terms of public education, but my question is, do you think what has already been done, in terms of newspaper, tv and radio advertisements, is enough. Some of the advertisements have been very graphic and bloody, showing the consequences of drink driving. Why hasn't it worked?
